Pepenadores – BACK ON THE BUS

Well there was a slight intermission after my degree finished .. but as a friend said to me yesterday…… once you’re on the bus dont get here I am again on the art bus, we just had a bit of along stop waiting for a new conductor… that shows my age..all 39 and three quarter years of it…………and now we are trundling forward into/onto wherever….

So whats been happening…….well afer my degree show (I passed by the way)…..I was straight onto an exhibition with Sarah Waters at Rums Eg….Under the Microscope…..IMG-20170617-WA0002 and then at the Petersfield Museum..People of the Heath….. to do with the long term community project I am involved with which is an artist reponse to the archaelogical dig on Petersfield Heath

and then .. I know too many and thens..but I’m a grown up who cares about the rules…..and then I was back to working on my installation with Charlotte Edsell which opens at West Dean’s Chilli Festival today…….Pepenadores.  Super excited about that…..I sort of went off into a little world of my own.. the brief was a response to Edward James’ surrealist sculpture garden in Mexico using recycled materials..(sub text make something for nothing) and I’m always up for a challenge and it was right up my I imagined I was a waste picker..female of course….

and what would I do if I was just using the things around me to create an art installation…inspired by Stephen Turner’s ‘everthing comes from the  the egg’ on at the Aspex Gallery at the moment….we set to work….Charlotte had load of plastic cups and i has a trampoline insert..yes….. well here it is……..IMG-20170809-WA0004

if you’re there use the pathway to go round the back of it..its a good view from there too……

In between times I’ve been inspired by Bedales’ Shakespeare Festival and  ‘As You Like It’ …great to see that one of the girls who used to do Phoenix Juniors was helping out doing the costumes..which were AMAZING!    ..also had a few visits to galleries ..including the superb regency Jane Austen pot by Grayson Perry which is in Winchester Discovery Centre a the moment , went to a talk given by Pat Hunter on the  Henry Moore Tapestries and loved Chris Ofili Weaving Magic….. – great tapestry done by Dovecote Studios in Edinburgh currently at the National Gallery….oh and I’ve visited a few festivals with glastonbury Girl..all the envirionmental art at glasto was great…..and am now off to ITALIA for more inspiration….

Blink and you missed it but I also  did open Studios at Christine Watkin’s Art House for the Romsey Festival at the beginning of July and will be at showing a few things at  Christine’s  Open Studios  later on this month…..currently waiting to see if my funding comes through to start my Masters Degree in September..I’ll keep you posted..oh and Ive been invited to do some handstitiching for the Embroiderers Guild at the Great British Sewing Bee at London Excel in September and will be with the Embroiderer’s Guild at the Knit and Stitch  in October

So I thought I was being a slacker over the summer……this blog is definately a good idea for me……not sure about anyone else…….

PS look forward to seeing your solo show at Ally Pally are the Stones?

PPS Must dash off to West Dean to meet my public… (sub text….. loiter in the bushes and her what they say about it)x

A cow, a cow my kingdom for a cow!!

well too many flipping days since my last blog and I’m definitely starting to get confused over where I’m putting stuff a the moment as I gear up for Open Studios – I  am exhibiting at the Physic Garden in Petersfield from Thursday this week..10 30 til 5pm drop in….  I am also exhibiting at Christine Watkins Art House in Romsey….I shan’t be exhibiting at Owselbury this year as I’m spreading my self a bit thin!  The Room6’ers will still be there tho and it’ll be  great..have a good one ladies!

So why so long since my last blog? I hear you ask..or not as the case may be..well there are a number of reasons, and I’m writing them here whether you are interested or not…because I can….I keep having this internal conversation with myself..why blog?//..the thirteen year old going on 30 year old (ttyogotyo) tells me I should just instagram????* any way I have decided I blog really for myself as its good to get a handle on where I sorry I am going to keep doing it…(*and I am instagramming as

mycathasniceboots now …I’ve a bet with ttyogotyo that she gets a share in my profits if she gets me 600 followers by Christmas…evidently there’s a method…all double dutch to me but hey I’ll try anything) ….I haven’t broken it to her that as I’m not  Hemsley and Hemsley or Zoella there  is no profit in it..but hopefully she wont read this…????well she will but whether she admits to it or not is another matter)   the other reason I stopped was it was my birthday…..39 again… I was busy…spent a great day at Art in Action….. there was also a flurry of activity when I tried to get a  life size cow made …( hence the title of this blog)…. don’t ask..suffice to say it all got too awkward and mired in raising money.. not my strength…so I gave up on that lark and went to Glastonbury and Camp Bestival instead with glasto girl (Bananarama were cr** and always have been – they should have stayed with fun boy three..Turin Brakes were a completely different matter however……..)……also did a lovely work shop with the ladies at Droxford Textiles group…..they are doing open studios too next weekend too…pop by and see them..details in the Hampshire Open Studios booklet….to complicate things even further.and contribute  to bloglessness.. in my search for studio space we decided to sell up and move but after selling and then losing our dream house with studio.. (yes flippin flippin  heck!!1). we decided it was better to stay put and try and create more space in the space we already have…watch this space……space space..aaargh

…then there was rather a large amount of time spent  writing materials for the Embroiderers’ Guild connected to the Worlds Longest Embroidery for Schools..look out for it in the autumn and please get schools will be great…….

……and there you have all my excuses…by the way… .I  do realise I am just talking to myself now..this blog is about naval gazing after all….the next bit’s more interesting honest…if you;ve hung on in therr it wil lbe worth it….nice pictures to follow, anyway there are all my excuses and I do feel vindicated

Feel I’ve been neglecting my drawing and creativity so was good to get away to Cornwall for a week….

..arriving in St Ives in style…don’t ask….stitching  and dinner out..when you have children….yes you are extremely happy with a plastic cup of wine and half a cheese and onion pasty….fine dining is so over rated!….who needs the Wolseley…

the mad canadian does……hello are you reading me in Canadia?

I digress….stayed in a cottage overlooking Barbara Hepworth’s garden which was definitely good for the soul and did a great Tate Walk the Tate is closed .they’ve got loads of stuff going on..I had a great week…..  also worked on Viyella bodies…yes the ladies are still there…..

Viyella Bodies

saw some fab exhibitions in st ives.. .Arthur Lanyon..getting the household paint out as we speak!!! of the best exhibitions I’ve seen in ages..the images don’t do the paintings any justice they really were fabulous…really inspiring and very tactile…

Arthur Lanyon

also saw great work by Terry Frost, Tony Shiels. and Bryan Pearce…...

aren’t these lovely?..There was a lot of rubbish too…

So that’s it, my edited highlights for the the last month and a bit and I think I’m back to the present and I’ve caught up with myself….

Just been to  drop off some stuff at Petersfield Arts and Craft Annual Exhibition this morning and tomorrow I will be mounting some limited edition prints I’ve had latest money making scheme.. or not……hmmm

PPS  If my car holds up I’ll come and see you at Open Studios this week Sarah..sorry this is a bit of a jumble but I just decided I need to get it written and posted..once you fall off the horse its hard to get back on if you leave it a while…x.

Panic* on the streets of Petersfield or thank goodness for Frida*

No blog for a bit as have been panicking! *The reason for the panic was all the stuff I needed to get ready for open studios, Petersfield Arts and Crafts and People of the Heath Exhibition. (Also been trying to negotiate a way back to uni and fit in visit to the Embroiderers’  Guild in my role as Education Scholar to discuss plans for  getting more stitch in to schools..all looking very exciting!!  More info in next blog! ** Frida (as in Khalo) is my sat nav who gets me from A to B….. I am now a sat nav believer…I used to be very sceptical but am now a convert!!! (With a little bit of help from Ken)

Frida managed to negotiate my drops offs for Open Studios at Romsey and Owselbury smoothly and avoid the crush for Boomtown. Anyway two weeks ago I was in a bit of a tiz about everything so I did the only reasonable thing and  left home….went  to Gateshead for a bit..fab trip to the Baltic which had some great art on show .

Ida Ekblad – junk but presented interesting way

Tony Swain- great paintings and collage on newspaper

Fiona Tan – huge truck and great film set to sound of narration from Marco Polo travel will follow just losing will to live with downloading next time ay!

Pink Ladies

So panic over I have delivered to open studios…Christine Watkins..who will again have great eclectic mix of stuff on show this year including yours truly… I was so pleased to be invited to show there. Had a great chat with Christine who is really lovely…if you are  around Romsey please go and see her at  her house..drop in for cake and a cuppa you won’t be disappointed!!  (Christine and John Slade – the sculptor who works next door will even provide  a map to help you negotiate all open studios around Romsey.)

Each cell has a specific meaning

Then I whizzed over to Owselbury  to drop more stuff –at the Granary Studios..where I am showing with ‘Room 6’.  Another  great mix of stuff, tea, cake and demos.  ( Hoping to make it to the New Forest to see you too Sarah.)

As well l as being at Open Studios over the next couple of weeks  I am helping Lyndsay Taylor at her workshop for Liss in Stitches..where I will be her slave for the day.  I am also trying to pull together a children’s  entry for the Steep Flower Show…got all the bits just need to put them together now…oh dear!! As well as looking after the kids I think I may have bitten off a bit more than I should have but what the hey…..nearly finished my pieces for the Flora Twort and had a great few enlightening hours at Fishbourne Palace learning about the’ Ashling Hoard’ from Professor Stuart Needham..loving jewelry they recovered..they liked making necklaces, big rings and huge bangles…wonder why it interests me so much? HMMM? More fodder for my exhibits!

Also managed to cram in a bit of camping  WITH POSH CRISPS….though rain hampered our efforts somewhat so we packed up early and came home.

Anyway I have definitive list now that I appear to be on top next???? Bring it on.

What a difference a day makes….oh knickers!

Dinah Washington
Dinah Washington

yes this is a truly amazing fact. Yes indeed sir. It really is amazing. And quite true. Point in fact …follow my first two wildly contrasting days of the summer holiday…..

Yesterday – first day of the holidays – and I spent all morning slouching around in my dressing gown drawing..lovely..absolute blisss…true I was a accompanied by the trainee teenager pirouetting around the kitchen and high kicking to what ever is most popular on capital radio these days BUT I had my iPad on full blast, listening to reruns of the Archers and was firmly concentrating on my Peoples of the Heath submissions…here’s a bit from my sketch book

imageimageimage(this was following on from the hell journey back from the north west which involved Lionel Richie legendary dinosaur  and T. Rexwho  lives in a castle with Queen Helen, King Gary, Princess Megan and Prince Nathan …..don’t ask ..and two hours stuck crawling though Stafford.)   Anyway ..I digress back to day one of hols…drawing and progressing to stitching to John Osborne on Radio 4 and Desert Island discs with Imtiaz Dharker

Imtiaz Dharker poet and artist………drawing by Imtiaz…

Imtiaz Dharker drawingFantastic particularly liked the bit about the Gujarati belief that some people possess the gift of always having enough in to feed unexpected guests……. Think I’m a bit of the opposite of the opposite of that cos I definitely had too much chicken last weekend..mainly thanks to glasto girl, who turned up,with an Italian and lots of chicken……couldn’t  flipping give it away in the end!…..anyway I digress…back to calmness and serenity of day one of hols …..furthering my research for People of the Heath project for exhibition at Flora Twort. . . ..and enjoying wonderful drawing and stress free sketching and googling into the beaker people… found beautiful photo constructed from what wessex archeology found …lots of supposition here…..skeleton was found not that far away from Hampshire, it’s a bit of a stretch… but artistic licence and all that….

Isn’t she lovely!image

I have stitched my version of the image in to my version of the Heath. Just trying to decide if it works in an old up- cycled frame. Like the oldeness and reuse of it but not sure that it’s quite right aesthetically…..hmm one to ponder.. working on three pieces.. …. yes displacement activities…… I should be making bags!!! To sell. Actually looking at it again think the frame might work but the mount is definitely wrong…

…the squares represent the barrows and finds the swishy bits the Heath…..women’s head free machined in bottom left..not that clear…..

WHat do you think Sarah…, does it work? Or can you actually see it? Sorry I do take rubbish photos I need to find a good photographer who wants some practice!!!! I’ve got another frame coming now!

Anyway I digress back to what a difference a day makes….  Day two of the hols .and you couldn’t ask for a more different day …not sure that this was what Dinah was going on about ….but artistic licence and  all that……spent today tootling down to the coast and doing a bit of shopping to get more stuff for daughters camping trip…ended up being rather stressful with warring factions within the camp and cries for can I have more stuff please .. ….all after ice creams, toys and lunch out…well Gregg’s,  which is lunch out for us these days.. If it doesn’t sound it, believe me it was VERY very stressful… back to  this evening and sorting out how many cards I need to have printed for open studios, speculate to accumulate and all that jazz.. Will anyone buy anything? …aaaarghhh!!!!! What do I need to send where and what do I need to finish/start? Who knows ….anyway had a premonition in the imagesupermarket….yes I can just feel it in my bones, I am going to come into money ….. And throwing caution to the wind I  decided not to give into the children’s cries for yet more tat and treated myself to a classy pair of lacey knickers from that well known luxury brand “Tu” …ah the high life….Rigby and Pellar eat your heart out..just wait till I win the Turner!!!!

P.S. Talk  to you tomorrow for an update Sarah. X
