Gujarat here I come …..

My Upcoming Solo Trip to Gujarat: A Cultural Journey into Stitching, Ajrakh Block Printing, and More!

So, the last few months have been filled with excitement and anticipation as I’ve been planning my next big adventure — a solo trip to Gujarat! This journey is something I’ve been dreaming about for a while now, and it promises to be a cultural immersion into the rich heritage, traditions, and arts of this incredible state.

My focus for this trip will be on exploring the art of stitching and the development of Ajrakh block printing. Through the help of my amazing friend and guide, Gautam I’ve been fortunate enough to secure a spot learning from the master printer and dyer Sufyian Khatri in Ajrakpur. My intention is not just to learn, but to respond creatively to his work. Though two weeks isn’t much time, I’m hopeful that something profound will emerge from this experience.

Gujarat: A Rich Tapestry of Culture and Craft

Known for its fascinating history, traditional dances, vibrant handicrafts, and mouth-watering cuisine, Gujarat is a state that promises to offer an equally unique and diverse experience. Here’s a glimpse of what I’m excited to discover during my time there:

Heritage and History in Ahmedabad

I’ll kick off my journey with a few solo days in Ahmedabad, which is going to be a vibrant start to the trip. Ahmedabad is known for its bustling streets and historical landmarks, and I plan to soak it all in. My itinerary includes visiting the Calico Museum of Textiles, a place that will offer me deep insight into the history of Indian textiles. I’ll also check out Raasleela, a company supporting heritage stitch in the fashion world, also will be visiting Gandhi Ashram, where Mahatma Gandhi lived and worked and I can’t miss visiting the Iskcon Temple, and if the time and weather permits, I’m hoping to explore a stepwell or two, known for their intricate architecture.

Ahmedabad’s rich past can be seen in its diverse landmarks, and I plan to develop a relationship with a local auto rickshaw driver to help me uncover some hidden gems along the way.

Crafts of Gujarat

Gujarat is world-renowned for its handicrafts, and after meeting up with Gautam, we’ll be diving deep into its colourful, time-honoured traditions. Gautam has arranged some lovely stitch workshops for mew where i hope to learn skills to add to my teaching repertoire ….mirror work, suf and ahir embroidery will be covered.

I’ll also spend time in Ajrakpur learning about Ajrakh block printing, a centuries-old tradition. Through the guidance of Sufyian Khatri, I’ll get to learn a little about the fine art of this printing method, which uses natural dyes to create stunning geometric and floral patterns. Ajrakh is a representation of the region’s deep connection to nature, and I can’t wait to immerse myself in this rich tradition.

Gastronomy: Exploring Gujarat’s Unique Flavors

One thing I’m particularly excited about is experiencing Gujarat’s food scene. The state’s cuisine is known for its harmonious balance of sweet, salty, and spicy flavors. I’m hoping to savor a traditional Gujarati thali, which is a meal that features an array of vegetarian dishes that vary by region. Dhokla, Undhiyu, and the sweet indulgence of Jalebi are on my list of must-try dishes. But that’s not all — Mohanthal (a rich, sweet dessert made with gram flour) and Basundi (a delicious, creamy dessert) are also calling my name!

Festivals and Celebrations

My trip coincides with some of Gujarat’s vibrant holidays, so I’m crossing my fingers for the chance to experience its festivals in full swing. These festivals are a feast for the senses — bursting with colour, music, and dance. I hope to witness firsthand the exuberance of local celebrations, where the streets and villages come alive with cultural performances, dances, and joyous festivities.

A Personal Journey of Art, Culture, and Reflection

Aside from learning about the rich Ajrakh tradition, Gautam has also arranged for me to attend a few stitching workshops during my stay. These workshops will allow me to engage with local artisans and gain a deeper understanding of traditional crafts. Through these experiences, I’m hoping to discover something that resonates deeply with me in terms of my own research and artwork. I’m excited, a little nervous, and most of all, I’m curious about how this journey will shape my creative work.

As I prepare for this trip, I feel both a sense of excitement and a bit of fear, but I’m hopeful that this experience will lead me to the next chapter of my artistic path. I’ve planned ahead, packed my bags, and I’m ready for an unforgettable adventure — one that I’ll carry with me for a long time.
